I love the first Saturday in May! I get to attend my friends' annual Kentucky Derby party. Their house is always full of red roses, Derby decorations, unofficial betting (out back), mint juleps, wonderful people, and plenty of Southern food. John's Southern accent is an added treat because he makes you feel like you're visiting "Louiville" and not the desert.
But let's talk food. The feast always includes a country ham and biscuits. They make cheesy grits, corn pudding, a panini-like bread and cheese item that I believe is called Hot Browns. I call it Derby Eyes because I eat them on Derby day and I have passionate eyes for these tasty bites. Pimiento cheese sandwiches, black-eyed peas, and bourbon bread also are on the menu.
For dessert we had a choice of Derby Pie made with pecans, chocolate chips and bourbon, a trillion layer Apple Stack Cake (made with bourbon), and Bourbon Balls (duh - made with bourbon). Maybe the trillion layer cake was only 16 layers, but it was amazingly tall and amazingly delicious. As we were standing around the dessert table, another friend asked where the Bourbon Brownies were. My thoughts exactly!
Fairytale Brownies used to bake fudgy Amaretto brownies. We've even had a few customers suggest we bake Rum brownies. Maybe we'll have to start experimenting with a Bourbon brownie for next year's derby. I'll be happy to be a taste tester.
Until then, try our gourmet brownies in 12 chocolate flavors at www.brownies.com or call 800.FAIRYTALE.
