Well, I'm back after being off of the grid for a while. I took a couple of much needed days off of work after the holiday. I'm sure quite a few of you did the same! Now that the major holiday rush is over, our customer service department gets many comments about the Fairytale Brownies gifts that people received. There was one comment in particular that stuck out to me today and I thought that I would share with you. This customer is just as passionate and excited about Fairytale Brownies as we are!  ~ Hilary

Dear Fairytale Brownies,
I work for MGM/Mirage Corporation and all of us at our Contact Center received a Christmas gift from Lance Burton, which was a 4 Brownie Gift Favor. Well...when I got home from work, I gave one of the brownies to my boyfriend and I had one also. I have never ever tasted a brownie that good, needless to say, I ate the other three! When I went to work the ext day, I asked one of my co-workers if she had tried them and she too thought your brownies were to die for. I have been raving to everyone who will listen that your brownie are the BEST I have ever had. I love brownies...forget cake, I want brownies! Thank you for making a small treat truly a delight. I will be placing an order soon. I know I can't go long without having another, and another, and another.
Sincerely, Vonnie J.

Our bakery is located in Phoenix, AZ and one of our neighbors is a construction and development company called Vivo. Recently, Vivo  volunteered for the holidays at a local shelter in the valley called St. Vincent De Paul. They asked Fairytale Brownies for a donation of brownies to go toward the shelter, and we were more than happy to help out. Here is a picture that some of the Vivo workers took passing out some of our Fairytale Brownies. Additionally, Fairytale Brownies continues to donate thousands of brownies toward St. Vincent De Paul on a year-round basis. Thank you Vivo for helping to make the world a sweeter place!

We received a couple of very nice customer follow ups today that I thought I would share. These customers ordered brownies as holiday gifts, and their gift recipients LOVED them (we knew they would)! We love to hear your brownie stories. It helps us make sure we are doing things right and keeping our customers and their gift recipients happy. Keep those brownie stories coming! ~ Hilary

Dear Fairytale Brownies,
I just wanted to let you know that everyone we sent the brownies to have called telling us how good they were and how they have really enjoyed them Thank you for your help and the prompt delivery to each recipient. Have a nice holiday.

Dear Fairytale Brownies,
I did not know your business existed. I received a catalog in the mail and was happy to support a local company, so I decided to send a few gifts. The recipients loved the product. I decided I'd better try some for myself and see if they were really that good. I ordered some and I love them, they are soft, tasty and not over the top sweet, which is good. Te biggest problem I see, is hiding them in the fridge so I won't eat them all in the first week! Congrats on a great product with reasonable pricing.
Judi K.

Well, I think the below customer stories speak for themselves. We are devoted to providing an extraordinary product and customer experience. We LOVE hearing your brownie stories, so keep them coming! And, thank you so much to Dan F. and Katie C. for your wonderful compliments!

Dear Fairytale Brownies,
My tech support department was sent a box of your brownies last year by one of our software distributors, and they were just about the best I ever had. I think my heart skipped a beat when I opened the box and saw another batch this year! This time I went around the building and shared them with the folks in other departments, and just had to share with you the instant message I got from one of my coworkers after sampling your brownies:
[15:08] : I think I just saw GOD

Keep up the good work.
Dan F.

Dear Fairytale Brownies:
I received your brownies last Christmas and loved them so much that I am sending them to friends this Christmas. As I went to order online, I was wondering how it would work since I had 5 people to who to send brownies. Your website is WONDERFUL. It could not have been easier. This is the best website I have ever ordered from and I only wish that other web sites were as well-designed, user-friendly, and thoughtful. Every concern I had was easily addressed. I have never written to a company before, but just had to let you know how stellar your service and your brownies are. Plus, there was FREE SHIPPING on the very item I was sending! Thank you so much for making my holiday shopping easy and fun.

Sincerely,
Katie C.

Have a happy and safe Holiday Season.

Good Afternoon! Our customer service department received a nice customer rave today and shared it with the company. I decided to share it with you all as well. The message reads:

Dear Fairytale Brownies,
My solider in Iraq just received the brownies yesterday and is loving them!! They only took 6 days to get there via the post office. I really appreciated the Free Shipping to the APO/FPO address, and it's a great holiday gift too! He took a picture of the package and will send it to me! Thanks so much!

Mary C., Mesa AZ

Thank you Mary, and we hope that your soldier enjoys this little taste from home. We hope everyone out there is having a happy and healthy Holiday Season.

Hello! When I got into work today at 7 am, there was already so much hustle and bustle going on in our warehouse that I decided to snap a few photos and share them with you. We are really busy prepping for the holiday rush, so our shipping department is pretty busy building gifts as orders come in for holiday shipments. Below is a picture of a few pallets of Santa's Surprise gift towers ready to be packed into their respective shipping boxes. I thought these towers looked like pretty red Christmas trees!

Below is a picture of our new custom gift printer in action. We can print full-color photographs and logo's on to our newly designed gift bands. This form of customization is a new process for us, but has been very popular so far this year. Our corporate customers love that they can order custom boxes with no minimums and they get free matching logo gift cards as well.

Hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes peak at Fairytale Brownies. Oh and by the way, I hope you caught us on News Channel 3 this morning from 6am - 9am. We had a great time with April Warnecke and the Good Morning AZ film crew.

If you are a fan of YouTube, check out the Fairytale Brownies YouTube Channel. We have a bunch of videos posted there ranging from our very early days on local news programs to our "Food Network - Food Finds" video from a few years ago. My favorite video is the demonstration on how we bake our luscious gourmet brownies! I can watch that video over and over!

Remember, Fairytale Brownies are excellent holiday gifts and great for corporate gifts too! The process to order brownies is quick and easy, you can go online to www.brownies.com or just call 800.324.7982! A customer service agent is just a phone call away! Hope you are having a happy and safe holiday season.

Being in the food business, we love the Food Network here at Fairytale Brownies. We especially love Unwrapped, and are very lucky to have their camera crew here today filming for an upcoming episode. It is very cool to be here and see how the process works and how one of my favorite shows is made, so I wanted to share a behind the scenes look at our Unwrapped segment.

Here's Fairytale Brownies Co-Founder Eileen Spitalny answering questions on camera. Notice the monitor that shows the cameraman how the shot looks? So cool!

And from the other angle. Here you can see the interviewer.

And some custom boxes we made especially for Unwrapped!

Stay tuned for an airdate for our episode, entitled "Get Comfy"! In the meantime, keep coming back to the blog for more behind the scenes action.

We love getting feedback from our customers here at Fairytale Brownies. Every time you order brownies, you and your recipient get an opportunity to tell us what you love and if you have any suggestions for us. If you haven't ever responded to our online survey or via the postcard in your brownie box, please do so the next time you order. Or send an email to service@brownies.com. You just might be featured on our blog! We got some emails today about two things that are near and dear to our hearts, soldier care packages and our partnership with KaBOOM!, so I thought I would share them.

"Hey, I just want to say thank you so much for supporting the troops. One of the girls I know said she was trying to order brownies and you sent some to her deployed soldier at your expense. Although I am lucky enough to have my husband home this holiday season, I just want to say thanks again, because little things like this mean the world to deployed soldiers who are happy to have anything that reminds them of home. Next deployment I will be sure to pass along the word that you guys are great! I hope your business continues to be prosperous." -Rebekah S.

"Hello Fairytale Brownies. My wife and I have been using your services to send client gifts for 10+ years. We were recently visiting my grandparents in Long Beach, MS and were amazed to see your name on a small park sign - as a supporter and contributor to the KaBOOM park project. Thank you for giving my 3 little girls a fun place to play in a tiny town that was almost wiped off the map." -Ryan

Thanks Rebekah and Ryan for your kind words, we really appreciate it!

~Kari

Hello! We just received a comment into our customer service department that I thought I would share.
In every Fairytale Brownies gift we send, we include a 'Business Reply' card. On this card, we ask for customer feedback regarding the gift they received. We ask questions such as the condition of the gift as it arrived, how did the brownies look and taste, and overall impression. We also ask for comments and new product suggestions. We encourage our gift recipients to fill out these cards by offering an incentive. If you complete and return the card within 30 days, you'll be entered into a monthly drawing for a Fairytale Dozen. Here is a link to our monthly winners page.

The comment that we just received was from last months Business Reply card winner. Her comment is as follows:

Dear Fairytale Brownies,
I want you to know how surprised and grateful I was to receive your scrumptious brownies. I can't thank you enough for your thoughtfulness. A faithful BROWNIE lover.
Barbara W. - Gasport, NY

Well, you are very welcome Barbara, and we thank you for filling out our survey so we can create the best quality gourmet brownie gifts available. Enjoy your Fairytale Dozen!

Hello, my name is Steve, and I am an Information Technology Team support member. I have been here about 3 months and I am very thankful to work with a great team and contribute my knowledge. I really enjoy IT and I am happy to be here and learn so many new things. Fairytale Brownies are definitely the best brownies I have eaten anywhere. I really admire the commitment of the company to use only the finest and freshest ingredients, and offer new products every year.
Did you know that something in every department here at Fairytale Brownies utilizes information technology? It is true, IT support is always needed and is required year round. Yes, from updating equipment and applications involved in things ranging from getting ingredients, to selling brownies, we strive to keep ourselves on the cutting edge of technology. We work as a team to help make Fairytale Brownies a great company with a superior product.

Thank you,
Steve K.

Gosh, it's unbelievable that it is November already. We are geared up here at Fairytale Brownies for the holiday season. As we've shared with you previously, we have some really cool new custom gifts this year. We can print your full-color logo or photo on our keepsake wooden boxes and on our gift favors. Also new this year, we are printing on gift ribbon that wraps around your Fairytale gift. Click the links below for examples of our new custom gifts.

Examples of our Custom full-color Gift Favors.

Examples of our Custom Gift Ribbon.

Examples of our Custom Keepsake Gifts.

What is really cool too, is that there are no minimums on custom gifts anymore. Previously, we had a 25 gift minimum, but we decided to do away with that to make it easier on our customers who didn't need 25 or more customized gifts. There is a one week lead time on custom orders to get the order placed and to get the artwork approved. So, if you're interested, the custom gift deadline is November 17th!

You can always call customer service with any questions at 800.324.7982. You can also email us at service@brownies.com with questions as well. We will get back to you within one business day.

Thank you, and have a Fairytale Day!

Food Start Ups Advice: One of the most common mistakes I see with new startups is the failure to protect their intellectual property (their "brand") through trademarks and copyrights. One of the first things a new business owner does is choose a name for the venture. Often these new owners register the business name with their Secretary of State and then think they own the exclusive rights to the business name - this is not the case! In order to fully protect the use of the name (and more importantly ensure they are not infringing on someone else's name), it is critical to secure a federal trademark for the business name.

One option for securing a federal trademark is to hire an intellectual property attorney. But this can often be very expensive. The less expensive route is to search for and apply for the trademark yourself with the United States Patent &Trademark Office. To begin the process, go to http://www.uspto.gov. Click on "Trademarks" in the left column, and then click "Search TM database (TESS)." Finally click on "New user form search (basic)." This is your starting point to search and make sure that somebody else is not already using the name. It can be very costly if you skip this step and find out down the road that someone else owns your business name (especially if it is a large business with deep pockets).

Once you determine that your business name is not already in use, you'll want to begin the application process to secure your own trademark. Start here to get an overview of the process - http://www.uspto.gov/web/trademarks/workflow/start.htm. This web page has many other links where you can learn more details about how it all works. Filing a trademark registration only costs $325, so it is well worth your time and money to take care of this early on in your new business venture. Good Luck!

We received the following email from a customer who recently discovered that our gourmet brownies make excellent thank you gifts.

Dear Friends at Fairytale Brownies,

One of the University's "sweetest donors" sent your products our way a few weeks ago to cheer us and the quality and presentation of the product knocked our socks off in Alumni Relations.

When it was time for us to order some "brownie point" thank you items, Fairytale Brownies came immediately to mind.  Now, not only are we delighted with your product, we are incredibly impressed with how easy and fast the ordering process is (we just ordered yesterday and the treats will arrive Tuesday without excessive shipping charges).  Wow!

We will most assuredly order from you again in the future AND I have a big mouth :) and will tell others in my network.
THANK YOU for being such a deliciously customer-centric business!

Warm personal regards,
Ms Chris LeDuc
Alumni Relations Director, Interim
St. Cloud State University

Thanks for your comments Chris! We pride ourselves on providing an extraordinary product and customer experience, and are glad to know we are succeeding.

We are starting to get busier as the holidays gets closer. Today the Shipping Team was busy at work building the Fairytale Tower gift to fulfill orders that have been placed.  We thought that the assembly line of towers looked like a toy shop (by the way, the picture doesn't really do it justice, it's much more impressive in person).
Check it out:

The end of the assembly line here is where the gifts get packed into Fed Ex boxes and get shipped to those lucky gift recipients about receive a yummy gift of gourmet brownies!

We hope you enjoyed this 'behind the scenes' look into the Fairytale Brownies warehouse. We love to hear customer feedback, so don't be shy and leave us a comment :o)

Recently, Fairytale Brownies was featured in a story in the "Chronicle of Philanthropy". The article details Fairytale Brownies partnership with KaBOOM! and how we give back to the community. I hope you enjoy reading the article as much as I did!

Bakery's Partnership With Charity Is Recipe For Success

How it gives
: Fairytale Brownies supports KaBOOM!, a Washington charity that builds playgrounds in neighborhoods nationwide. Fairytale Brownies donates 25 cents for every "Happy Birthday" or other special-occasion message it sells. It also donates gift bags to KaBOOM! that the charity hands out to volunteers and corporate sponsors. Last year, Fairytale Brownies added a page to its Web site that allows customers to donate a dollar to KaBOOM! when they make a purchase.

KaBOOM! LogoFairytale Brownies employees volunteer with KaBOOM! to build playgrounds in and around Phoenix. "For our employees, it's a great eye-opener and builds awareness of their community," says Eileen Spitalny, one of the founders. "For a lot of us, we feel we have never accomplished so much in a day."

How it got the idea: When Ms. Spitalny and her business partner, David Kravetz, started the company, they received numerous requests from charities that wanted to work with them. For the pair, who met on a playground as kindergarten students, KaBOOM! seemed like the perfect fit. The charity was small but growing, like their company, and it worked nationwide.

How much it gives: Fairytale Brownies has raised $3,900 in the past year through its Web-site donation program. It has also contributed more than 20,000 pounds of brownies, or roughly $60,000, and donated an additional $30,000 since the company started working with KaBOOM! in 2002. Fairytale Brownies employees have donated more than 1,000 hours of volunteer time.

How the business has benefited: The exposure Fairytale Brownies receives through its donations of gift bags has helped drive sales, says Ms. Spitalny. Her business has generated more than $14,000 in the past two years from people who said they heard about the company through KaBOOM!

Working with KaBOOM! has also helped Ms. Spitalny develop ties with some of the charity's corporate donors, including Home Depot. "What charities can offer is the exposure they have to the business community," says Ms. Spitalny.

The charity's perspective: Darrell Hammond, founder of KaBOOM!, says working with Fairytale Brownies has increased public awareness of his charity.

Fairytale Brownies publicizes KaBOOM! prominently on its Web site, and a year after Hurricane Katrina, the company gave Mr. Hammond space in its print catalog to write about continuing needs in Louisiana. "They are probably still one of the top 10 reasons people hear about KaBOOM!," he says.

Why the partnership has worked: Fairytale Brownies employed about 15 people year-round when its founders approached KaBOOM!, and as it has grown the company's employees have continued to develop new ways to work together. "It has to be an ongoing conversation about how we can help each other," says Mr. Hammond.

This week Fairytale Brownies had a Corporate Gifts showcase in our retail store for all of our Corporate Clients and Distributors. We showcased our new customizing options and our new custom packaging. We also sampled Fairytale Brownies, Fairytale Cocoa and Fairytale Coffee as well as our newest item, Fairytale Truffles! It was a great success and we had a great time visiting with all of our Corporate Clients and Distributors. Here is a picture from our event. Also, check out the background through the windows!
