Sweetest Day is October 17th!

Honestly, I had no idea what Sweetest Day was until I did some research on it. I thought it was along the same lines as Valentine's Day, but I still wanted to know the origins of the holiday and why we celebrate it! Here is what I found:
  • During America's Great Depression, a man from Cleveland organized many people in an effort to provide a small token of friendship to the underprivileged, orphans, and homeless. Today the holiday has expanded to include small tokens of appreciation to friends and neighbors too. These tokens of appreciation can be small gifts or small acts of kindness. The holiday is held on the 3rd Saturday in October. (http://www.holidayorigins.com/html/sweetest_day.html
  • The origin of Sweetest Day is attributed to candy company employee as an act of philanthropy. However, a reporter contends that "Dozens of Cleveland's top candy makers concocted the promotion 84 years ago and it stuck." A Sweetest Day Committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to "newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor" in Cleveland, Ohio. The Sweetest Day Committee was assisted in the distribution of candy by some of the biggest movie stars of the day. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetest_Day)
Today, Sweetest Day now largely involves giving small presents such as cards, sweets and flowers to loved ones. While it is not as largely observed as Valentine's Day, it is still celebrated in the United States. If you are celebrating Sweetest Day this year with your family, friends or loved ones, consider sending gourmet brownies! Chocolate brownies are the epitome of Sweetest Day in my opinion, so why not try them? I have to say I like the candy-maker-conspiracy origin story a lot better. Hey, as long as we get our candy in the end!
