At Fairytale Brownies, we love stories about best brownie contests. It just gets us all fired up about getting back into the test kitchen.
The Kansas City Star recently reported on a best brownie contest among culinary students at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Kansas dessert manufacturer Tippin’s put up $1,000 as a prize for the contest.
This wasn’t your standard brownie bake-off though. All brownies had to meet commercial requirements as though they’d be distributed through grocery stores.
According to the Kansas City Star, the students didn’t let that limitation hold them back. Instead, they created brownies that were “fudge-y, cake-y, dusted with powdered sugar, thickly frosted, sprinkled with nuts, drizzled with caramel, layered with coconut, infused with raspberry jam and topped with whipped cream and cherries.”
Kim Kindred won the $1,000 grand prize for the best brownie with a mocha cheesecake brownie using Folgers instant coffee crystals and toasted almond and espresso bean candies. Casey Godinez took home $200 each for her second-place cherry brownie and third-place coconut brownie.
That gives us a few ideas to test in our kitchen. Will the best brownie join our dandy dozen gourmet brownie flavors? Only time will tell.
