In honor of World Coconut Day and courtesy of the APCC, here are four juicy facts about the coconut:

  • Coconuts are not really nuts. They are drupes. Drupes are fleshy fruits with a central stone that houses the seed. Young coconuts are used as fruits. Mature coconuts are used as seeds.

Sweet apartments for cookie-loving football fans

We recently stumbled across a news item that made us hungry for cookie baskets … and a little football! cookie baskets for football fans

According to Mark Holmberg of WTVR in Richmond, Va., a long-abandoned cookie factory is being converted into high-end apartments. Just another real estate deal? Hardly!

The cookie factory-turned-apartment complex is right next door to the Washington Redskins' brand new practice facility. Once the renovation is complete, tenants will be treated to freeway access, a gym, a swimming pool, plenty of parking … and an overlook of Redskins training camp for three weeks every summer.

That’s quite a selling point in a football-crazed country. Of course, the cookie factory was already a pretty sweet hunk of real estate. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist.) The historic building opened as the Southern Biscuit Works in 1899. It was most recently known as the FFV Interbake Cookie and Cracker Factory.

Brian McNeal, a member of the partnership of developers transforming the factory into an apartment complex,...

Back-to-school tip: Send brownies as a student care package

Back-to-school season is an exciting time around Fairytale Brownies. That’s partially because we’re only a few miles down the road from Arizona State University. It’s so fun to see the students return to town! student care package brownies

It’s also exciting because we’re so busy. It seems families have caught onto the tip that brownies make a great student care package. I mean, no one wants to move back into the dorms on an empty stomach. Right?

So, a tip for the families of college students: Send brownies or cookie baskets. And here are five tips for college students as they return to campus this month.

1. Get to know your campus. Most colleges offer study areas, computer labs, tutoring services, and more. It’s up to you to find these resources and take advantage of them. After all, that’s what they’re there for!

2. Don’t schedule back-to-back classes. There are few things more exhausting than sitting through back-to-back lectures.

3. Take a break … but keep it short. After every hour or so of studying, take a...

Gourmet brownies are perfect for the royal baby in your family

Boy, gourmet brownies Everyone loves a fairytale. And when the story includes a baby, well, we women love it even more!

A new little prince was born to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and husband Prince William yesterday and the world rejoiced. Most of us only know the couple from a distance via the media, but that didn't stop us from sharing their baby news with everyone yesterday: It's a Boy!

Now we wait to catch a glimpse of his beautiful face, hear his name and watch him live happily ever after.

At Fairytale Brownies, two mamas, two grandmas, and a great aunt (me!) are still waiting for our own "royal" babies to be born. With each birth announcement, we are so filled with joy for the family. The births may not make the world news, but each one is royal news in our world.

Of course we'll celebrate the births with gourmet brownies, gift baskets of cookies and food gifts galore. With so many varieties of Fairytale treats, even the most disinterested relative will enjoy visiting the new addition to the family.

Thank you food gifts for soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors

patriotic brownies as thank you food giftsMemorial Day is a time to remember and honor the many men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

At Fairytale Brownies, we respect and appreciate the sacrifice of our military members. In addition to offering our brownie gifts and cookie baskets in patriotic red, white, and blue packaging, we send 10 thank you food gifts to U.S. soldiers deployed worldwide every month.

This initiative is conducted through Soldiers' Angels, which is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and their families.

Soldiers’ Angels was founded in 2003 by the mother of two American soldiers. Today, hundreds of thousands of "Angel" volunteers assist veterans, wounded and deployed personnel and their families in a variety of ways.

We’re proud to do our part to support our brave military personnel. Thank you for all you do.

It’s easy for you to send patriotic...

Kitchen catastrophe? Next time order brownie gifts or cookie baskets

If baking brownies, cookies, and other gourmet desserts was easy, we’d all do it. Right? Well, most of us certainly try. And most of us succeed. At least most of the time.

And then some times, we don’t. Instead, we’re left with no other option but to laugh at ourselves and our cringe-worthy kitchen catastrophes. In these moments, we probably wonder why we didn’t just order brownie gifts or cookie baskets instead.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these pictures of ultimate baking failures are worth a thousand laughs.

(Thank you to good-natured Reddit users for posting their embarrassing photos and to Huffington Post for collecting 14 of the best into an article entitled: Cookie Fail: Reasons You Should Be Easier On Yourself When You Mess Up.)

We’ve included two of our favorite cookie fails in this post. For example, check out the picture above of peanut butter cookies that were so hard that they broke the spatula. Or, enjoy the photo below of chocolate chip cookies that seem...
