Thirty-five years after he was born on this day in 1849, Marcellus Gilmore Edson changed life as we know it. (Or, at least as I know it, since I’m somewhat addicted to his invention.)
According to Wikipedia, the Canadian pharmacist became the first person to patent peanut butter in 1884. In his patent application, he described peanut butter as having “a consistency like that of butter, lard, or ointment” and requiring peanuts to be milled to “a fluid or semi-fluid state.”
If that sounds less than appetizing, our peanut butter-flavored gourmet brownies and cookie gifts may do the trick for you.
