Bosses have a day to celebrate themselves . . . why not employees too?! Did you know that this Friday, March 7, 2014 is National Employee Appreciation Day? If you're serious about employee recognition, you'll want to pay attention to the rest of this post. Employee recognition is one of the most effective and affordable ways to reduce turnover, curb absenteeism, increase productivity and keep employees engaged with their work (source).

According to the experts, here are a few employee appreciation gift ideas:

  2. Starbucks: How about a mid-afternoon Starbucks break where everyone gets their favorite drink? An afternoon caffeine jolt is always welcomed and appreciated.
  3. Plan an activity: Fun activities, or team building exercises can...

Gourmet gift baskets with a lemon zest

If you live in Arizona like us, you know that spring time is citrus time. Maybe that’s why someone decided that March 29 should be National Lemon Chiffon Day. lemon blondie gourmet gift

At Fairytale Brownies, we don’t do lemon chiffon. But we do bake delicious Lemon Blondies. These treats combine a touch of tart and a bite of sweet and are topped with lemony icing for pure enjoyment. You can send Lemon Blondies as a single-flavor gourmet gift or in a mixed gift basket with other bar flavors.

In honor of national lemon chiffon cake day and courtesy of Sunkist, here are a few fun facts about lemons:

  • Although lemon cultivation started in the Mediterranean in the first century A.D., 95 percent of all lemons in the U.S. are grown in California and Arizona.
  • Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is known to ward off scurvy. As a result, lemons have spread through history thanks to the British navy, California gold miners (namesakes for the San Francisco 49ers), and more.
  • You probably won’t ever get scurvy. But you’ll almost...

A Twenty Year Fairytale with Fairytale Brownies!

I never thought I'd still be here, but twenty years later here I am still working at Fairytale Brownies, and what a Fairytale it's been!

This "Fairytale Journey" (as I call it) began when I answered a want ad in the Arizona State University school paper.  At the time I was hired to sell our delicious gourmet Belgian chocolate brownies at street fairs, festivals and farmer's markets across the Valley.  I also helped out wherever I was needed - in a small entrepreneurial start-up, everyone does everything.  Some days that meant cracking eggs to help Mike (Eileen's husband and our first baker) and Ron (neighborhood friend, baker, band member) in the kitchen, delivering brownies to grocery stores, working our tiny retail shop, taking orders over the phone. . . the list goes on and on!  As the word got out and we attended more events, people began asking if we would ship Fairytale Brownies to family and friends, so we did, and that's how the mail order aspect of the business came to be.  Now...

Potential employers meet ASU engineering students, sample fudge brownies

fudge brownies

For the past couple of years, I have had the pleasure of participating in the Arizona State University Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Career Fair. Twice a year, 2,500 engineering students have the opportunity to meet about 150 future employers from all over the country.

I bring plenty of fudge brownies and gourmet cookies to the fair for the students and visiting corporations. The fair is a great way for the students to learn what types career opportunities are available in either a full-time position or in paid or unpaid internships.

From Fairytale Brownies' viewpoint, the fair is an opportunity to be a part of the community and show attending corporations our gourmet brownie gifts and custom options.

We so enjoy collaborating with the folks at ASU School of Engineering. With each semester, our partnership strengthens and the business grows. Here's to a bright future with ASU!

Win Fairytale fudge brownies with clever little Valentine poem

When I was a child, I remember hearing my aunt recite this silly poem to my uncle on Valentine's Day:

There are tulips in the garden,

There are tulips in the park.

But the two lips I like best are your two lips in the dark.

They laughed and then gave each other a smooch.

Those aren't lines from Shakespeare, but I love that little poem and the memory it brings.

Because I'm always thinking, "chocolate," I have another little poem for Fairytale's fudge brownie lovers:

Violets are purple and roses are red,

Flowers are beautiful, but send fudge brownies instead.

Yes. That one is silly as well. I know our Fairytale Brownies fans can write much better lines than mine! Dazzle me with your poetry skills and you could win a gourmet brownie gift. I'll send the winner a Fairytale Dozen.  Respond wherever this blog is posted.

I will monitor the responses, and then a few of us will choose our favorite one on Friday.

Fudgy chocolate brownies and rich cream cheese. What a combo!

Rich cream cheese swirled into fudgy chocolate brownies. What’s not to love? Well, someone loved the idea that they pronounced February 10 as Cream Cheese Brownie Day. Sweet! fudgy chocolate brownies with cream cheese

We deliver two gourmet gifts with a cream cheese kick in our Cheesecake Swirl Bars and our Cream Cheese Brownies. More on those treats in a moment. First, here are three facts about cream cheese from Wikipedia.

Although we think of cream cheese as an American product, early versions were referenced in England as early as 1583 and in France as early as 1651.

William A. Lawrence of New York became the first person to produce cream cheese in mass when he purchased a Neufchatel factory and alteed production processes in 1873.

Cream cheese is versatile! It’s used in everything from gourmet gifts and creamy sauces to crab rangoons and certain western-style sushi rolls.

And, of course, it’s used in several gourmet gifts from Fairytale Brownies. Our Cheesecake Swirl Bar combines fine cake flour, organic vanilla extract, pure...
