Nurses With The Right Stuff Deserve A Sweet Brownie Treat For Nurses Week

I began working for the local newspaper during my sophomore year of college. I was majoring in journalism and was so excited to be near REAL reporters. One night at happy hour, a veteran reporter spent a good 30 minutes complaining about his career choice. When he realized I was still in school, he looked me in the eye and said, "Change your major to nursing. Do it now, and you won't regret it."

Nurses Week, browniesRamblings of a drunken man? Well, yes. But his girlfriend (now wife) was a nurse and loved her job.

Although I didn't follow his advice, I don't know if I would have been a good nurse if I HAD changed majors.

Knowing several nurses in my life, I realize they are successful in their chosen field because they have the right qualities for the job.

Good nurses must be empathetic and compassionate; they must be able to handle stress and accept suffering and death; they must communicate well and pay attention to details; and they must be able to switch gears, shifts or procedures at a moment's notice.

Nurses are a second pair of hands for physicians, and angels to the infirm. They have my utmost respect and admiration.

I wish I could send every great nurse a special gift of fudge brownies from Fairytale for Nurses Week! Instead, I encourage everyone to send brownies to their favorite nurses on their own with a personal gift message.

Nurses Week is May 6-12. Remember your favorite nurse with a sweet treat of thanks.
